BCS Stem In the Gym (Formerly STEM on the Greenway)

Each year, Bradley County hosts a community-wide event to promote STEAM education in Cleveland and Bradley County. For several years the event was on the Cleveland Greenway. Due to the unpredictability of weather, the event is held in the Wacker Commons at the PIE Innovation Center.

This year, Black Fox Elementary hosted a booth for the “STEM in Space” theme based around year-long rotations of the constellations. Students assembled constellations using toothpicks and marshmallows and then were immersed in an interactive exhibit with a constellation projector where they could match their designs to real constellations.

Black Fox Elementary also entered the county-wide STEAM inquiry challenge. Fourth and fifth grade students answered the driving question “How can we take better care of our community?”

Fourth Grade Research (2024 County Wide WINNER): Students chose to focus on Recycling accessibility in Cleveland/Bradley County. The students polled teachers and staff to gauge their awareness of recycling center locations in Cleveland and the frequency of recycling occurring.

Fourth Grade Project (2024 County Wide WINNER): Students created the “Trashiraffe”, a giraffe sculpture constructed entirely out of recycled plastic collected from the student body. This was based on a study of the “Junk Sculptor” Leo Sewell’s project “Trash-o-saurus”. Students designed and put together Trashiraffe over several weeks and learned about repurposing trash to make something meaningful.

Fifth Grade Research Project: Students researched the effectiveness of energy usage at Black Fox Elementary by using energy reports from the Bradley Central Office. The students studied alternative energy sources and the effectiveness of alternative energy in other schools.
